A first English edition copy of The Making of a Sailor, which is the photographic story of schoolships under sail. 

The illustrations within this book are reproductions of photographs made on the voyage of the ship Joseph Conrad around the world in 1934-36. 

Alan J. Villiers was a writer, adventure, photographer and mariner having also written The Sea in Ships, Last of the Windships and Voyage of the Parma. 

With one hundred and ninety one photographic plates. 
Collated, complete.

Condition

In quarter calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with some light marks to the boards and extremities. Internally, firmly bound with bright pages which are mostly clean with some light scattered spots to the first few pages.
