An attractive leather bound volume containing three novellas by François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand. Published in French. The first novella, Atala, was inspired by Chateaubriand's travels in North America and is is told from the point of view of a 73 year old hero whose story is preserved by oral tradition among the Seminole tribe. The next story, René, had an immense impact on early Romanticism through its presentation of a sensitive and passionate young man who finds himself at odds with contemporary society. The final tale is inspired by Chateaubriand's notes from a trip to Spain.
Condition
In a quarter calf binding over patterned boards. Externally, lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned.
