These two volumes contain the letters the Thomas Lawrence exchanged with his biographers, Liddell Hart and Robert Graves, whilst they were each in the process of writing their biographies. These letters answer questions posed by the biographers, and offer an interesting look at the man beyond the biographies. Thomas Lawrence became famous in his lifetime for his role during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, earning him the nickname ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. During his life he published ‘Seven Pillars of Wisdom’, an account of his experiences during the First World War. He’s alleged to have embellished a lot of details in ‘Pillars’, though it still offers as an informative memoir about the war. He also translated some novels during his time, included ‘The Forest Giant’, originally written in French by Adrien Le Corbeau’, and ‘The Odyssey of Homer’, originally in Greek. Lawrence has been immortalised in the 1962 film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, in which he is portrayed by Peter O’Toole.
