The delightful traditional Russian folk tale of King Douda, retold and illustrated by Russian illustrator Boris Artzybasheff, and with Artzybasheff's bright illustrations - in red and green and gold and black - throughout. 

A wonderful first edition from a fascinating artist. Born in Kharkiv (then part of the Russian Empire), Artzybasheff emigrated to New York and served an expert advisor to the U.S. Department of State, Psychological Warfare Branch, during World War II.

After 1940, he devoted himself to commercial art, including advertisements for Xerox, Shell Oil, Pan Am, Scotch Tape and Parker Pens.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Bumping to spine tail, otherwise externally excellent. Minor loss to dust wrapper back strip head and tail, with minor light handling marks to back strip and rear wrap. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
