What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated, Original Binding, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

Modèles pour Vins, No. 619.

A vanishingly scarce survival, all other examples seen on the market in the last thirty years contain a fraction of the designs included in this 1937 work.

With four hundred and fifty six numbered tipped in designs, and an additional three leaves of tipped in accoutrement designs, such as those for serving temperatures, vintage descriptions and wine cellar advertisement labels. Collated complete.

The accompanying text offers alternative wines which can be utilised with the same label design, including Chablis, Beaujolais and Pedro Jimenez.

With seven blank leaves, as called for, with original decorative borders to the rear of the work.

With the vanishingly scarce tariff card, dated 1st September 1937, showing the pricing for their collection of ready-made labels.

Containing a wide range of styles of label, including traditional crested Bordeaux labels to art deco Port designs. The work also contains two designs for Champagne, with one an unusual striking black design and the other a more traditional example.

Published by Imprimerie Wetterwald Freres, a wine label making company based in Bordeaux. Founded by Cyprien Gaulon, a lithographer artist, who himself was inspired following a chance meeting with Goya after he had been expelled from Spain. Indeed, Gaulon printed and published Goya's notable work 'Toros De Burdeos'.

Condition

In the publisher's quarter cloth with pictorial boards. Rebacked with endpapers renewed. Externally in excellent condition. Rubbing and marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Evidence of repair to hear of Tarif leaflet. The odd very faint tide mark, not affecting the labels.
