This catalogue was presented by the Maggs Bros Ltd., the personal antiquarian booksellers of King George V. Maggs Bros Ltd. have been a part of a number of historical bookselling milestones, including a successfully negotiated purchase of a Gutenberg bible and the Codex Sinaiticus from Soviet Russia in 1932. They also hold the record for most expensive book purchased, that being the first book ever published in England, William Caxton's The Canterbury Tales, which they purchased for £4,200,000.
Each item in the catalogue includes a corresponding purchasing price from 1937.
Many of these books were acquired from the personal library of renowned luxury chef Robert Viel, the founder of the famous 'Restaurant Viel' in Paris.

Condition
In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, smart, with some age-toning to the wraps and some light shelf wear. A few spots to the wraps and a small tear to the head of the spine. Internally, front hinge is tender but firm. Volume is firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
