By Alfred Bestall, best known for writing and illustrating Rupert Bear for the London 'Daily Express' from 1935 to 1965.
With the inscription of Marjorie Patricia Bristow, dated 1936, to the front free endpaper.
Rupert Bear, a cornerstone of British culture since his first appearance in 1920, was originally created by Mary Tourtel, in order to win sales for the Daily Express from its rivals, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail. The enduringly popular character has since appeared in a number of television and film adaptations.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head, with fading to spine and head of rear board. Front hinge strained, and detached to tail. Rear hinge strained, with board slightly tender. Inscription to front endpaper. Internally, binding strained throughout, with five gatherings towards start of the work slightly loose, and page 63-64 detached. Light spotting throughout. Amateur colouring to pages 11, 12, 37, 38, 67, 68, 124 and recto of rear free endpaper. Ink number written to tails of pages 11 to 49. Small loss of paper to tail of page 17 and 18.
