This novel is about the orphaned Jane, who winds up under the employer Mr Rochester, a mysterious man who lives at Thornfield Hall. 'Shirley', published in 1939. This novel is set in Yorkshire during an industrial depression, set against the backdrop of the Luddite uprising in the Yorkshire textile industry. 'The Professor', published in 1939. This novel follows William Crimsworth as he becomes a teacher at an all-boys boarding school in Belgium. 'Wuthering Heights', published in 1940. This novel has striking portrays of mental and physical cruelty, following the emotional story of Catherine and Heathcliff. 'Villette', published in 1941. This novel follows Lucy Snowe as she moves from her native England to a French village where she is employed to teach at a girls' school. The three Bronte sisters have become three of the most renowned female authors of their time. They were very close during their lives, and spent their childhoods feeding each other's avid imaginations. Emily and Anne both died sadly young, both suffering from ill health, both dying within a year of their brother, Branwell. Charlotte survived all of her siblings.
