A beautiful work, rebound in half calf, and illustrated throughout. With the publisher's original paper wrap bound in. With numerous full plate and vignette illustrations and photographs, both in colour and black and white, to both volumes. 

Volume I is dedicated to the history of the train and railway, and contains three beautiful tipped in colour plates alongside the other illustrations.

Volume II is dedicated to 'natural locomotion', and details the history of the hitch, car, automobile, bicycle and other forms of 'mechanical locomotion'. This volume contains four tipped in colour plates.

This is the work of aeronautical pioneer Charles Dollfus, who held several world records in ballooning, including the first stratospheric flight in France.

Condition

Rebound in half calf with paper covered boards. Externally, lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Mark to publisher's paper wrap of volume I. Pages otherwise clean and bright.
