What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce
The scarce edition in book form of J. H. Hunt's study of the fakirs of India, a group of Muslim Sufi holy men or women who survive on only what they can acquire through begging. Most fakirs follow the Islamic faith, or its more mystical practice, Sufism, though there are also fakirs in Hinduism.
Hunt initially read the paper to London's Osler Club on May 11th 1934, before it appeared in the 'St Bartholomew's Hospital Journal' in October, November and December 1934.
Illustrated throughout with photographs of Indian fakirs, many depicting practices of self injury.
