Description

First Edition, Illustrated, With Dustwrapper

In the uncommon unclipped dustwrapper. The first edition of the work. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton. Hughes-Stanton was a major figure in English wood engraving in the twentieth society. He later went on to co-direct the Gregynog Press with his wife, Gertrude Hermes. The Ship of Death is one of Lawrence's most famous works regarding death, and refers to the ancient burial practice of placing a model ship in a tomb so as to carry a soul to heaven.

Condition

In the original quarter cloth binding in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally in excellent condition with slight bumping to the extremities. Slight lifting to spine label. Dustwrapper is sound with chipping and loss to the extremities and rear of the wrap. Handling marks to the wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just the odd spot.
