What Our Customers Say...

Description

Folding Maps, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

The thirteenth publication of the Argonaut Press, limited to four hundred and seventy five copies. This volume being number two hundred and fifty two printed on Japon Vellum.

A reprint of Sir Richard Hawkins' observations of his voyage, originally published in 1622. This volume includes the facsimile of the original title page.

Edited, with an introduction, notes, and appendices by James A. Williamson.

With introductory notes on the South Sea, the Straits of Magellan, Sir Richard Hawkins and his Voyage, and observations on this volume and its influence.

Sir Richard Hawkins' volume gives the best extant idea of Elizabethan life at sea. In 1593 he sailed from Plymouth on the Dainty with two small vessels up the coast, sighting what he called Hawkins Maidenland (probably the Falkland Islands.) He continued his journey on the South Sea until he was wounded and forced to surrender after a three day fight with three Spanish ships, and was imprisoned in Lima and then in Spain.

Illustrated with four maps, two of which folding.

From the library of Eric Kenneth Prentice Back. Kenn Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey for many years.  He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations.  His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration.
