The first edition of this set comprising a catalogue of Frederick John Nettlefold's collection of pictures and drawing by various artists of the British school, as well as some of foreign schools to the fourth volume. Complete in four volumes.
Nettlefold was an important industrialist, grown up surrounded by beautiful things; his inclination was to make a catalogue of them. He had these reproductions in colour made from the works in his own collection.
Each of the art pieces is vastly described by C Reginald Grundy, art connoisseur well known by anyone interested in art, as well as accompanied by a short biography of their artists. Volumes three to four are also edited by F Gordon Roe.
With an introduction, bibliographical references to the rear of volume one, and an Index to the rear of volume four.
In alphabetical order, with volume one comprising artists from A to C, volume two D to H, volume three I to S, and volume four T to W.
With eighty five coloured plates to volume one, with works by artists such as Richard Parkes Bonington, Edmund Bristow, George Chambers, Thomas Collier, and others, seventy five plates to volume two, including Edward Dayes, John Dearman, Peter de Wint, William Gowe Ferguson, et al., one hundred and two to volume three by Julius Caesar Ibbetson, Harry John Johnson, John William Buxton Knight, Edwin Landseer, John Linnell, and others, and one hundred and sixteen by artists such as William Turner, Alfred Vickers, George Vincent, Marguerite Gerard Francesco Guardi, Gilbert Munger, and plenty others.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart with slight shelfwear and a slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Minor library stamping to the front pastedown. Slight damping marking to the front board to volume three. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated throughout with various coloured plates. Collated, lacking pages 1-5, 11-13, 15-17, 43-47, 115-117, 121-122, 159-168, 175-193, and 217-220 to volume two. William Danielle's 'In the Garden House Read, Calcutta' to volume two, has been tape repaired both to the recto and the verso of the plate. Pages 221 to 224 to volume two loose but present.
