What Our Customers Say...
Description
Illustrated, Rebound
The third edition of Jane Austen's six major novels, edited by Robert Chapman. Five volumes bound into two volumes, with notes, appendices, and contemporary illustrations. Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park can be found in the first volume, whilst Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are in the second. A previous owner has inscribed quotes in ink to both the recto and verse of the front endpaper in volume I. To the recto, a J.H. has inscribed a quote by Goethe 'in der beschränkung zeigt sich der Meister', which roughly translates to 'the master craftsman is able to restrict himself'. To the verso, the prior owner has quoted some of Rudyard Kipling's poem called Janes Marriage. 'Jane lies in Winchester - blessed be her shade! Praise the Lord for making her, and her for all she made! And while the stones of Wincheser on Milsom Street remain, Glory, love and honour until England's Jane'. The same person has inscribed a quote by Juvenal, which reads 'For anyone wishing to study the habits of the human race, the members of a single household will suffice'.
Condition
Rebound in brown cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, smart. A little rubbed to the boards of volume IV and rubbed to the spines in both volumes.
