Ulysses is an incredibly influential novel, and is a major work in the modernist canon. First serialized in the American journal 'The Little Review' before being published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach in Paris. A parallel of Homer's epic 'The Odyssey', Joyce's novel is set in 20th century Ireland and explores the relationship of the country's relationship with Britain. A beloved work by many, T.S Eliot referred to 'Ulysses' as being 'a book to which we are all indebted, and from which none of us can escape'.
An important, and beautifully preserved first Hamburg edition of this groundbreaking novel.
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Several light spots to the wraps. Fading to the spines, which have suffered minor loss to the head and tail, as is common with these paper wraps. Prior owner's inscription to the half-title 'D C C 1933'. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
