Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) was an Italian adventurer and author. Remembered in particular for his womanizing ways, he associated with many prominent figures in Europe, including royalty, popes, musicians and artists, including Mozart, Goethe and Voltaire.

'Histoire de ma Vie' covers Giacomo Casanova's life until 1774; this work is regarded as being among the most trustworthy sources regarding society in Europe during the 18th century.

Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was the pseudonym of Arthur Llewellyn Jones, a Welsh mystic and writer known for his horror, supernatural and fantasy works. He also translated a number of works from French. His translation of this work remained the standard for many years after its initial publication in 1894.
