Description

First Edition

The first edition, first impression of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding.

Bound in the original characteristic red snakeskin-like cloth, 'Black Mischief' is Waugh's third novel, following the efforts of Emperor Seth as he tried to modernise his African Empire, alongside his fellow Oxford graduate, Basil Seal.

From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn’s first marriage to ‘She-Evelyn’. The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally fairly smart, though the spine is slanted and slightly faded, and there is some shelf wear to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age toned with the odd spot throughout.
