The first edition of mining engineer Alpheus Fuller Williams' two volume 'geological, mineralogical, crystallographical, petrographical and chemical study of Kimberlite and its associated cognate and accidental inclusions', or, study of diamond formation.

General Manager of world famous De Beers Consolidated Mines, Williams authored a number of scientific works on the subject, of which this was his most important.

With numerous folding charts and full plate and vignette illustrations to each volume, alongside eleven colour plates to volume I, and nineteen to volume II. Collated, complete.

Chapter titles include 'The Diamond-bearing Alluvial Gravels of the Union of South Africa', 'The Chemical Composition of the Diamond', 'the Crystallograpy of the Diamond' and 'Kimberlite Dykes and Fissures'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Discolouration to back strips, with shelf wear to spine heads and tails. Fading and tide marks to front board of each volume, most prominent to volume I. Tide marks to front pastedown and free endpaper of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Light tide marks to gutter of a small number of pages to volume one. Pages otherwise generally clean and bright, with the odd spot.
