What Our Customers Say...

Description

Author's Presentation Copy, First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce, With Letter

An interesting language study of the Minoan language, a series of characters on bronze age tablets from the Greek island of Crete. The Minoans used a writing system called 'Linear A' from 1800 to 1450 B.C.

In this work, the author, F.G. Gordon, attempts to assign modern Basque values to the Minoan characters.

The first edition of this scarce work.

A presentation copy from the author to an acquaintance of his daughter. Including a letter from the author to a 'Miss Percival' tipped-in to the front free-endpaper: '11 February '31, Dear Miss Percival, My daughter Mary once told me, I think, that you were interested in Cretan pictographs. I therefore venture to send you a copy of a recent publication on the subject. The identification of the signs is a tedious business, but this may not apply so much to the translations and notes. As a classical scholar you may find some of the conclusions interesting; they are certainly curious. At all events I hope that you will consent to accept the book as a slight expression of the pleasure I had from the production of the 'Iphigenia' some years ago. With kind regards, Yours sincerely, F.G. Gordon'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Containing a tipped in letter from the author to the front free-endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. A few spots to the first and last few pages, which are otherwise bright and clean.
