What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

Two volumes comprising the Purefoy letters, the first edition.

The Purefoys were the owners of the manor of Shalstone since 1418, and they continued to own it until the latter half of the eighteenth century, when the male line ended with Henry who, along with his mother, is the author of the letters included in this volume.

These letters throw much light on the domestic history of their period, containing not only important business letters, but also outward letter-books, such as the most trivial letter to a tradesman, or an invitation to a social event.

With extracts from the diaries of Henry, written from 1725 to 1756, in which he describes the places he went to and the people he met as well as account-books kept by both Henry and his mother.

Edited by H. Eland.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous full page plates illustrating the life of Mrs Purefoy and her son's, as well as facsimile reproductions of their entries and a folding plate to the rear of each volume. Collated, complete. With the uncommon, unclipped dust wrapper.
