What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Very Scarce

A very scarce printing of this important poetry anthology.

This is the presumed second edition, and was preceded by the first authorized edition of the same year which was printed by Princeton University for Sylvia Beach to secure the American Copyright. This edition was printed by Alexander H Buchman and Edwin A Johnson. Buchman's brother had sent him a copy from Paris. The duo assumed Miss Beach would grant them permission for an edition of 100 copies as they did not know of an American edition previously.  They were not aware of the aforementioned Princeton printing already in progress. They therefore printed this edition and were threatened with legal action from Sylvia Beach.  Instead of destroying their work, Buchman and Johnson gave almost all copies away.

Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Not a "going away" book'. The inscription is dated September 1931.

The leaves for this work are loosely inserted in the original portfolio cloth binding as they have never been properly bound - as called for. In a custom slipcase.

This copy is numbered 6 of the 103 copies printed.

'Pomes Penyeach' is a collection of thirteen short poems. They were written from Joyce from 1904 to 1924. Ezra Pound initially  rejected the publication of the poems however several of the works including "Tilly", "A Flower Given to my Daughter" and "On the Beach at Fontana" remain popular to this day.

Condition
