Walter Shaw Sparrow was a notable Welsh writer on art and architecture with a special interest in British sporting artists.

Copiously illustrated throughout with fifteen colour plates and ninety-three plates in black-and-white. Collated and complete. 

Also including a folding plate of the Alken Family Tree bound in opposite page 128, not usually included in this work. 

A Book of Sporting Painters acts as a companion work to Sparrow's earlier works British Sporting Artists From Barlow to Herring and Angling in British Art Through Five Centuries. This work also includes references to a variety of artists, including the noted artist George Stubbs, best known for his work on horses.

Containing a previous owner's ink signature to the front free-endpaper.

Also containing a tipped-in, detached plate from a previous owner, with the name 'Mr William Molyneux Cohan' on it.

Condition

In the publisher's original green cloth pictorial binding. Externally, very smart, with just some light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and a small mark to the front board. Containing a previous owner's ink signature to the front free-endpaper. Internally, front hinge is just slightly tender, but remaining firm. Remainder of binding is firm throughout. A small closed tear to page 240. Besides the odd spot throughout, pages are generally bright and clean.
