This account of the ordinary soldier's First World War experience is a fictionalised version of real events, representing a widely relatable experience. 'John Bullock' reflects the 'John Bull' of English culture, the quintessential Englishman.
The title is also intended to echo Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan (1684).
