Hailed as being one of the first English books to be described as a novel 'The History of Tom Jones' was first published in 1749. It is a vast work, spanning eighteen books, and stylistically a Bildungsroman, depicting the central character's mental and moral coming-of-age. The novel presents many aspects of life at the time, set during the Jacobite rising of 1745, and the style of the narration is most personable. Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was an English writer and dramatist, remembered for founding the first intermittently funded and full-time police force; his writing was generally satirical and comedic by nature.
