The first UK edition, first impression of this work.

A wordless novel by American artist Lynd Ward, telling the story of a slave trader who steals a demon-faced drum from an African he murders, and the consequences for him and his family.

The tale is told with a series of one-hundred and eighteen full page woodcuts.

Wards previous work 'Gods' Man', was the first American novel told with no words, and is regarded as a precursor of the graphic novel.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth backed pictorial paper covered boards. Shelf wear to back strip tail. Spine label age toned, with loss of paper to tail. Light spotting to boards, which are lightly age toned. Light tide marks to head of rear board. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
