First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
First thus, the first illustrated edition of this work, which was first published in 1921 under the pseudonym of Lawrence H Davison due to Lawrence's reputation at the time. When this work was first published Lawrence faced destitution. This is a large paper copy of the work, in the original navy blue cloth binding. Of this edition there was a crown 8vo edition and a large paper edition. This work is in the second state, with the plate of Boston Harbour to page 271. The first state had a plate of Old South Church, most copies were recalled and destroyed. With numerous vignette and full page illustrations throughout. To the rear there are fourteen maps. D H Lawrence was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter. He endured official persecution, censorship and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the head and tail of spine. A few marks to the front board. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, D W Stanley. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with slight toning to the edges due to paper used. Pages are very clean.
