First edition. Limited to 300 copies for sale in the United Kingdom, of which this is copy 138. Signed by the author. An essay on Michel de Montaigne, one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance, known for popularising the essay as a literary genre. His work is noted for its casual anecdotes merged with intellectual insights. His volume Essais contains some of the most influential essays in Western literature. Translated by Stephen H. Guest and Trevor E. Blewitt. Written by Andre Gide, a French author awarded the 1947 Nobel Prize in Literature. Gide's career ranged from the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism. Author of more than fifty books, The New York Times described him as "France's greatest contemporary man of letters".

Condition

In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Light scattered spotting to the endpapers only.
