Description

An Important Work, First Edition

Set towards the end of the First World War, the play is set in the dugout of a British Army infantry company, and takes place over the days leading up to Operation Michael, a German military incentive. Following the relationships formed by the officers during the war, the drama focuses on the relationship between Captain Stanhope, a strained alcoholic as a result of war trauma, and Second Lieutenant Raleigh, a young, boyish officer new to the company who knew Stanhope before the war.

It had its first performance towards the end of 1928 at the Apollo Theatre in London, with Laurence Olivier playing Stanhope.

A first edition of this important play.

R. C. Sherriff (1896-1975) was an English writer, with this being his most well-known work.
