Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. With twelve full page plates of illustrations by Frank C Pape. This edition was published by John Lane as a part of The Bodley Head. The Bodley head was originally founded as an antiquarian bookseller in 1887 by John Lane and Elkin Matthews. The name was taken from Sir Thomas Bodley, the eponymist of the Boldeian Library in Oxford. The Bodley Head became a private company in 1921. Le Puits de Sainte Claire was first published in 1895. It was a French novel by the poet, novelist and journalist, Anatole France. He was incredibly successful and wrote several best-sellers. This text, in English, has been translated from the original French by Alfred Richard Allinson, a voluminous translator of continental literature. He translated several other works by Anatole France such as 'The Gods are Athirst' and 'The Garden of Epicurus'.
