1928 The Well of Loneliness
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound, Scarce
The December 1928 third Pegasus Press impression of this novel, meaning this is the fifth impression of the work, overall. Published in the same year as the first edition, published by Jonathan Cape to much controversy.
Initially published in the UK with two impressions in 1928 by Jonathan Cape, a British court judged the novel obscene because it defended "unnatural practices between women".
Hall's novel follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose 'sexual inversion' is apparent from an early age. She finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection.
In a quarter calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards, and with the charming 1931 bookplate of Audrey Farquhar to the front pastedown.
An attractive early edition of this significant work.
