In this volume, William James elaborates on his psychological study of private religious experiences and mysticism. Originally delivered as a lecture at University of Edinburgh between 1901 and 1902, James traces commonalities in religious experiences across a broad range of spiritual traditions. As one of the most influential thinkers in the United States, William James was dubbed the 'Father of American psychology' in the late nineteenth century. James was the first educator to offer a psychology course in the United States, and helped established the Pragmatic school of philosophical thought.
