    First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

    The first issue in this edition of the notable essays by Michel de Montaigne, in three volumes. He was one of the most important philosophers during the French Revolution, and is known for popularising the essay as a literary genre. 

    This edition, translated to English by John Florio, contains the complete collection of essays by Montaigne. The original translation by Florio was originally published in 1603, while the French edition firstly appeared in 1580. It contains a large number of short subjective essays on various topics. 

    The whole is illustrated with twenty six line drawings in pen and ink by G. E. Chambers, and many portraits in photogravure. Collated, complete.

    Condition

    In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint scattered spotting to the endpapers and fore edge, otherwise the pages are clean with only a hint of age toning, as usual. Illustrated with twenty six line drawings in pen and ink by G. E. Chambers, and many portraits in photogravure. Collated, complete.
