What Our Customers Say...
Description
Publishers' Original Binding, With Slipcase
The first thus.
Bound in the publisher's original paper vellum with yapp edges. Housed in the original marbled slipcase.
An interesting edition of Ben Jonson's English Grammar, containing a verbatim reprint of the 1640 original work, without the Latin notes, accompanied by the variant readings of the 1692 edition.
The first manuscript of 'English Grammar' was lost in a fire, with another edition subsequently written during Jonson's life and first published in 1640, three years after his death. However, this 1640 edition contained numerous misprints and errors, leading to a corrected 1692 edition. Therefore, Strickland Gibson, the editor of this work, believed it would be useful to have an edition containing both the 1640 and 1692 notes.
Introduced and edited by English librarian and bibliographer, Strickland Gibson, who acted as Keeper of the Archives at the University of Oxford.
With the ink inscription 'To Harry, January 1929. J'.
