The first edition of Florence Emily Hardy's biography of famed English author Thomas Hardy's early life, between the years 1840 and 1891. The work of his wife, and published after Hardy's death. Two years later, she published a second volume, covering his later life between 1840 and 1891.

Illustrated with fifteen plates, including a folding facsimile letter. Collated, complete.

With the illustrated bookplate of Vivian de Sola Pinto to the front pastedown. A British poet, literary critic and historian, he was a leading scholarly authority on D. H. Lawrence.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Small mark to head of front board. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Light handling marks to the start of the work, with pages otherwise clean and bright.
