Bound in the publisher's cloth with the highly pictorial dust wrapper was designed by Sir William Orpen, illustrating a naked image of titular character Mr Blettsworthy as he watches a group of cannibals from the story.
This popular allegorical satire was written shortly following the death of the author's wife. The tale presents a "Gentleman of Culture and Refinement" being stranded on the remote Rampole Island, where the only other inhabitants are a group of cannibals.
Written by prolific English author, H. G. Wells, known for his wide variety of works, from satire, to science-fiction and politics.
The personal copy of English author and artist, Brian Aldiss, with a note loosely inserted signed by Wendy Aldiss. Known for his science-fiction novels, Aldiss was greatly influence by Wells, becoming vice president of the international group in Wells' honour.
Condition
Bound in the publisher's cloth with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark. Pencil inscription to the front endpaper. Dust wrapper is very smart, with light edge wear and a few small tears to the extremities. A little loss to the tail of the spine, and slight rubbing to joints. Light spotting to the reverse of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with light spots to the fore edge and first few pages.
