    First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

    First edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding. 

    This is a collection of short stories which combines the genres of mystery, horror, and detective fiction. The short stories fall under headings such as 'The Story of Pure Sensation', 'The Modern Detective Story', 'The Romance of Crime', 'Tales of Chosts and Haunting', and 'The Frankenstein Theme'. 

    This work was so popular that later volumes were released with additional short stories, with continual reprints. 

    Notable stories include 'The Mystery of Marie Roget' by Edgar Allan Poe, 'The Gioconda Smile' by Aldous Huxley, 'The Brute' by Joseph Conrad', and 'The Cone' by H. G. Wells.

    Edited by Dorothy L. Sayers (1893-1957) was an English crime writer and poet, who also studied classical and modern languages. She wrote a range of mysteries that were based between the periods of World War One and World War Two. 

    Collated, complete.

    Condition

    In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. A bit of wear to the extremities, as well as the head and tail of spine. Front joint is strained at the top of the board. A bit of age-toning and spotting to the paste downs and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout.
