The first edition of this work, in the scarce orange cloth variant.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifty-six further plates. Collated, complete.

Arranged in seventeen chapters, and discussing matters including 'collecting Rowlandson', fakes, 'collecting as a sport' and 'the mere moderns', writer Desmond Coke paints a detailed portrait of a life spend collecting.

This volume features sixteen plates and illustrations tipped in to the front and rear blanks, and throughout the work. These illustrations include a hand-coloured botanical plate depicting 'Cantharsis, and Carissa', and a portrait of Edward Pelham Brenton.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fading to back strip. Handling marks and light rubbing to boards. Two plates pasted to front blanks, with one plate pasted to rear blank. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with frontispiece detached to head. Plate pasted to recto of frontispiece. Closed tear to title page centre. Six images tipped in between the title page and dedication leaf, with folding plate tipped in to 'Author's Note'. Six further images tipped in within the main body of the text. Pages bright, with the odd spot throughout. Instances of pencil notations to margins.
