What Our Customers Say...

Description

An Important Work, First Edition, Very Scarce

The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Obed Johnson (1881-1970) was an American academic, chaplain, congregational missionary and student of Chinese culture and history. He was known for being the first Westerner to attribute the origin of alchemy to ancient China, rather than the Greco-Egyptians 500 years later, in this work, A Study of Chinese Alchemy. Between 1909 and 1923, while he was a missionary in China, he translated several Chinese texts. These became the foundation for this study, which later became an influential work. E. T. Williams, who wrote the first preface, helped Johnson to outline the various chapters.

Condition

In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with some wear to the head and tail of the spine, and a little to the extremities. Spine has slightly darkened. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean but somewhat age toned, with some offsetting to the free end papers.
