What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Complete in two volumes.

Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates.

Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates.

Collated, complete.

A collection of the journals of Charles Greville, a diarist who was the Clerk of the Council in Ordinary, serving under Kings George IV and William IV, and Queen Victoria. These journals document the reigns of the three monarchs, from 1817 to 1860.

The journals are faithful records of the period, with detailed and competent observations of events Charles witnessed, and the people he associated with. However, Charles did not stoop to record private scandal, though the publication caused scandals when first published, with Queen Victoria stating that she was "horrified and indignant at this dreadful and really scandalous book".

Charles' journals are considered to be an incredibly valuable contribution to nineteenth century history, recording not just the public events, but the private causes that led to them. The journals were met with great public interest when they were first published, nearly ten years after Charles' death. The demand was as great in America as in England.

Edited by Philip Whitwell Wilson, this edition includes passages hitherto withheld from publication.
