Illustrated throughout, with numerous illustrations by John Austen. First thus, the first illustrated edition of this translation. Translated from the French of Anatole France into English by Alfred Allinson. 'The Gods are Athirst' is a fictional work set during the French Revolution. It follows the infernal rise of Evariste Gamelan, a Parisian painter. It is set during the Reign of Terror in Paris from Year II to III.

Condition

In original full cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the extremities as well as to the head and tail of spine. Patches of light rubbing to the boards. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown, Hugh Rees. Offsetting to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spots to the foredge, affecting the occasional page. Otherwise, light spotting to the endpapers and just the odd spots to pages.
