Illustrated, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

Complete in two volume. A limited edition work, limited to four-thousand three-hundred numbered sets, of which two-thousand three-hundred are for sale in England, and two-thousand for sale in America. This set is number two-thousand five-hundred and seven. A collection of the works of Francois Rabelais, including his famous novel 'Gargantua and Pantagruel'. Volume I with a frontispiece and ten plates. Collated, complete. Volume II with a frontispiece and and twelve plates. Collated, complete. Rabelais was a physician, humanist, monk, and Greek scholar. He was best known for this work, and for his grotesque bawdy jokes and fantastical satire. He inspired many writers after him, including Honore de Balzac. Translated into English by Thomas Urquhart, who is best known for this translation of 'Gargantua and His Son Pantagruel'. It is considered to be one of the best translations of any work into England, which Urquhart's learning and exuberance being a perfect match of Rabelais'. The third book was edited and completed by Peter Motteux after the death of Urquhart. Motteux was a playwright and author who is a significant figure in the evolution of journalism in England, being the publisher and editor of 'The Gentleman's Journal'. Illustrated by Frank C. Pape, an English artist and illustrator who stated a the Slade School of Fine Art.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Some light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities, resulting in a small amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume II. Minor fading to the spine. Some marking to the boards. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume II is strained but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
