What Our Customers Say...

Description

Fine Binding, Illustrated, Leather Binding

Reprinted from the 1636 edition edited by English botanist Thomas Johnson. John Gerard was a botanist and herbalist best noted for this work which was, when first published in 1597, the most widely circulated botany book in English. Many of the plants in the herbal were from his own garden in London though the work itself is largely a translation of an earlier herbal by Dodoen in 1554. When first printed, the herbal attracted some controversy as it was speculated to be mostly plagiarised from an earlier english translation, though modern authorities disagree as to how much of the herbal was or was not original. Here edited by Marcus Woodward and profusely illustrated with black and white vignettes and diagrams.
