An Important Work, Illustrated, Limited Edition, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

One of 350 sets printed by Bernard Newdigate for the Shakespeare Head Press. Incomplete, four out of eight volumes, comprising volume I part the second, chapters 154-261, volume I part the third, chapters 262-367, vol II part the first, chapters 1-52, and volume II part the fourth with chapters 200-249. Limitation number unknown as lacking volume I part the first. 

The Chronicles are a prose history of the Hundred Years' War by Jean Froissart, written in the fourteenth century. These volumes have been recognised for centuries as the highest expression of chivalric culture of England and France. Translated into English by Sir John Bourchier Lord Berners.

Limited edition.

Condition

In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally excellent, with minor shelfwear only. Slight bumping to head and tail of spine. Loosely inserted, the publisher's informational sheet containing a list of limited editions. Internally, firmly bound. Batchelor handmade paper bright and clean, with various leaves uncut. Hand coloured maps, heraldic head and tail pieces, coates-of-arms of English, Scottish, and Irish princes and knights.
