A scarce first edition with dustwrapper.
Welsh trade unionist and Labour Party MP Ness Edwards details the history of mining in South Wales. A coal miner himself, Edwards began working aged 13, before becoming a vocal conscientious objector to military service in the First World War by age 17. He begins with a chapter on 'Primitive Syndicates' and the events of the 1830s and ends with the Hauliers' Strike of 1898.
Tipped in at the appendix is a clipping detailing proposed wage cuts by mine owners to workers throughout the United Kingdom, along with contemporary ink annotations calculating the consequences to hourly pay rates.
Condition
In the original paper covered boards, with the scarce original dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Light fading to the spine and minor shelfwear to the head and tale of the spine. The dustwrapper is sound with sunning to the spine. Patches of rubbing to the spine and extremities. Former loss has been repaired to the head and tail of spine. Several marks to the front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting to the front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers. Pages are age-toned due to the paper type.
