The first limited edition illustrated copy of Hilaire Belloc's The Highway and its Vehicles. This is copy 888 out of the 1250 printed for this edition.
Belloc outlines a brief history of transport all around the world and the simultaneous developments of vehicles and highways respectively.
Hilaire Belloc was a French and English writer and historian. Other transport works include The Path to Rome (1902), but he was most successful in religious poetry and verse for children, such as Cautionary Tales for Children (1907).
Illustrated with 25 colour plates and 105 monochrome plates.
The book includes many pieces of historical art and illustrations.
Gold engraved lettering to the front board and spine and illustrated pastedowns and endpapers.
Collated, complete.
Condition
Original publisher's cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Some bumping on the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The spine is faded and slightly worn. Minor marks to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. A few occasional spots to the endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Inscription on the verso of the half-title detailing the issue number as 888. Tissue guards are present and in-tact, except for the tissue guard for plate 94 which is working loose. Plate 45 is missing.
