Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Held in the original cloth portfolio with ribbon ties in-tact. Twelve plates total, with two title leaves. The first, in Hebrew/block script, the second in English. To both title pages, each plate is named in order. There are images of Jerusalem from Mount Scopus, The Dome of the Rock, The Gate of the Chain, The Citadel, The Wailing Wall, King Solomon Street, David Street, Street Near the Temple Area, Street of the Chain, Tyropaeum, An Arab Cafe, Cattle Market at Herod's Gate. The illustrations and title leaves are loose as called for. This work was published by the Pro-Jerusalem society. The Society was formed in 1918 by Sir Ronald Storrs, the military governor of Jerusalem and Charles Robert Ashbee who is noted for being the leading designer in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Through forming this society they wished to protect and add to the amenities of Jerusalem and its neighbourhood. This included the preservation of antiquities and the establishment of museums.

Condition

In the original cloth portfolio binding. Externally, very smart with just the odd marks to boards. Ribbon ties are in-tact. Pages are loose as issued. Due to paper used, there is the occasional chip to page edges and there is slight age toning to the title leaves and plate edges. Otherwise, each page is clean.
