The first edition of this work from Welsh writer on art and architecture Walter Shaw Sparrow.

Illustrated throughout, this volume contains one hundred and fifty six etchings across seventy six plates. Collated, complete.

Documenting the fascinating history of British etching from Francis Barlowe to Francis Seymour Haden, Sparrow's work is divided into two parts.

The first, titled 'Nationality and Works of Art: Foreign Etchers working in Britain', concerns the influences of foreign arts, containing illustrations from Hollar, Van Dyck, Paul Renouard, and others, and the second, 'The British Schools,' looking at the first pioneers of etching in England; George Stubbs, Paul Sandby, Edwin Landseer, Rowlandson, Girtin and many others.

With ten pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
