Complete in two volumes. Later edition. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece and many in-text images. A collection of popular essays first published in book form in 1823, with the second volume first issued in 1833. Lamb himself is the Elia of the collection, and his sister Mary is "Cousin Bridget." Among the fifty-two individual essays, "Dream-Children" and "Old China" are the most highly and generally admired. Written by Charles Lamb, an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian. With an introduction by Augustine Birrell, a British Liberal Party politician, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland. Illustrated by Charles Edmund Brock, a widely published English painter, line artist and book illustrator. With the bookplate of William Alfred Westropp Foyle, a British bookseller and businessman who co-founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 with his brother Gilbert Foyle. Previously held in the library of Christopher Foyle, a British philanthropist and chairman of the famous Foyle's Bookshop in London. Bound by Birdsall, Northampton & London.

Bound in full calf. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. The odd page with text block unopened. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Birdsall, Northampton & London.
