A collection of popular essays first published in book form in 1823, with the second volume first issued in 1833. Lamb himself is the Elia of the collection, and his sister Mary is "Cousin Bridget." Among the fifty-two individual essays, "Dream-Children" and "Old China" are the most highly and generally admired. Written by Charles Lamb, an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian. With an introduction by Augustine Birrell, a British Liberal Party politician, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland. Illustrated by Charles Edmund Brock, a widely published English painter, line artist and book illustrator. With the bookplate of William Alfred Westropp Foyle, a British bookseller and businessman who co-founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 with his brother Gilbert Foyle.
