The scarce first edition, first impression of the two volume biography of James Lowther, 1st Viscount Ullswater. A Conservative party politician, Lowther was Speaker of the House of Commons between 1905 and 1921, making him the longest serving Speaker of the twentieth century. On his retirement as Speaker, he was given the title 1st Viscount Ullswater.
In his preface, Lowther explains that he undertakes this work with some hesitation, but does so because 'it has been my good fortune to have known a number of persons, who have played important starts on the national stage'.
Illustrated with ten plates to volume I, and eleven to volume II. Collated, complete.
With a contemporary owner's inscription to the front page of each volume, and a sixteen page publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume II.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright. Bumping to spine head and tail. Spotting to fore edge of text block. Contemporary owner's inscriptions to front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Patches of spotting to first few pages of volume I, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright.
