A limited set to seven hundred and fifty copies printed for sale. With Tobias Smollett's novels, printed for the Shakespeare Head Edition. Smollett was a popular Scottish author, famous for his picaresque novels, included in this series. With a humorous style and roguish and appealing hero, as well as a commentary a corrupt society, his work has influenced later novelists, including Charles Dickens.
Complete in eleven volumes. The titles included are The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, The Adventure of Ferdinand Count Fathom, The Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves, and The Adventures of Roderick Random.
Condition
In the original publisher's green cloth binding with titles stamped in gilt to spine and gilt to top edge. Externally excellent with only minor shelfwear. Cloth to spine has slightly faded. inscribed by a previous owner to front free endpaper to volume one and two of Humphry Clinker, undated. John Harkess' bookplate to rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Minor off setting to endpaper and faint spotting to fore edge, affecting only the occasional page, particularly to first and last few leaves. With the occasional unopened leaf.
